About the Workshop:
A two day workshop examining the use of acupuncture in antenatal and postnatal care. It has been designed to update practitioners about the use of acupuncture in the area of obstetrics. To meet this aim the latest published research from western medical and traditional Chinese journals will be examined as well as detailing clinical feedback from midwives about
their experiences on using obstetric acupuncture as part of their practice. Debra will also be using her own personal experience from 16 years in clinical practice specializing on obstetric acupuncture and 10 years spent designing and teaching acupuncture courses specifically designed for midwives. This workshop offers acupuncturists informed choices to expand the range of treatments they offer to women through out pregnancy and childbirth.
About Debra Betts:
With a background in neonatal intensive care nursing Debra entered into the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine in London, graduating in 1989 from the British College of Acupuncture.
Returning to New Zealand she started a private practice promoting acupuncture for women’s health issues, with a focus on teaching support people acupressure techniques that could be used for pain relief in labour.
In 1994 she was offered a teaching position with the New Zealand School of Acupuncture as a clinical supervisor where she continues to lecture on traditional Chinese medicine theory for first and third year students.
In 1997 she developed and ran her first specialised acupuncture course for midwives on the practical use of acupuncture for midwifery practice. Following the expanding range of pregnancy related conditions being successfully integrated into midwifery practice, further courses were developed.
In 1999 she published her first article in The Journal of Chinese Medicine to encourage the use of acupressure in labour. This was followed by further articles on treating obstetric conditions and led to her book The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth – edited and published by Peter Deadman in 2006 ( a sample chapter and abstracts of her articles can be found at http://acupuncture.rhizome.net.nz)
Her ongoing work with midwives led to the publication of a research paper on the use of prebirth acupuncture in the journal Medical Acupuncture May 2006.
In 2006 she was a guest lecturer on Obstetrics for the University of Western Sydney’s post graduate Masters Programme in Australia and at the Integrated Acupuncture Seminar for Obstetrics in London.
She currently resides with her husband and three children in Wellington, New Zealand

Normalizing Birth
A two day workshop for midwives, doulas and childbirth educators on the traditional Chinese medicine techniques of Moxibustion and Acupressure to facilitate natural birth and postpartum recovery
Pre Labour Techniques
- Turning breech and posterior babies
- Birth preparation at term
- To induce Labour
Labour Techniques
The use Acupressure and press needles for pain relief and problems arising in labour such as:
- Premature rupture of membranes
· Cervical lip
· Posterior position and deflexed heads
· For women during transition
· Delayed second stage
· Retained placenta
Post natal The use of Moxibustion, acupressure and diet to encourage lactation and promote postnatal recovery
Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) demonstrates that the traditional Chinese medicine technique of using moxibustion to turn breech babies is safe with a success rate that is greater than using external cephalic version (ECV). Research in nursing journals demonstrates that acupressure is a safe and effective method of providing pain relief in labour
This is a practice hands on workshop designed to empower practitioners with the confidence to both use these techniques with confidence in their practice and be able to teach support people the practical use of acupressure and Moxibustion.
Debra Betts is an acupuncturist with a nursing background. She has run acupressure courses for midwives in New Zealand for over 10 years and has published articles, booklets and a text book on the use of acupressure and acupuncture use in pregnancy and childbirth. http://acupuncture.rhizome.net.nz
